Message from the Headteacher

Asalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

Introduction

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the website for Madani Girls School

Background

Madani Girls School is a Voluntary Aided (VA) School which finds its origin in Madani High School.  It is the first purpose-built Islamic faith secondary school in the country. A combination of Islamic architectural design and modern building technology has succeeded in producing, what many people would consider to be a ‘world class school’. Equipped with the latest computer technology and communication infrastructure the institution has the capability of delivering the highest quality educational experience for all.

The school provides education for 300 girls of secondary school age and delivers the full subjects of the national curriculum. The school track record in terms of GCSE achievements is amongst the best in the country and the school will endeavour to maintain, and indeed improve the quality and standards of education for all our students. The institution is strongly placed to provide a model example of education with a distinctive Islamic paradigm congruent with mainstream Muslim experience in British society.

We are a very popular school and have one of the highest waiting lists in the city. Already the school has attracted a large number of visitors who have come from all parts of the United Kingdom and abroad. If you would like to visit the school then please contact the school, who will be happy to make the arrangements.

With best regards

Equipment Requirement

Parents should ensure that their child has all the basic equipment such as pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, compass and protractors as required throughout their education.  In certain subjects, for example design and technology, your child may require specific equipment which he may be expected to purchase.

The School Day

Please note that there is a slightly changed timetable for the Summer months when prayer is incorporated at the end of the school day.

The School Curriculum

Lunch Times

Students must remain on the school premises during lunch time.  They may either bring a packed lunch or have a school dinner.  The school operates a cashless system and payments for school meals are taken by cheque at the beginning of each term.

If your child is entitled to free school meals, or you think your child may be entitled to free school meals, you will need to complete a Local Authority free school meals application form (which is available from the school reception).

Free School Meals

Healthy Schools Programme

The school is committed to promoting healthier lifestyles as part of its Healthy Schools Programme, which includes healthier eating.  Please support Madani Girls School’s standards by encouraging your child to bring a healthy packed lunch. The school imposes a ban on sweets, chocolates, sugary and fizzy drinks, crisps and cereal bars.

Form Tutors

The form tutor is a key person who not only takes the attendance register, but is the first point of contact for many of the issues that affect students.  They will ensure that each individual student receives full guidance and support to achieve their maximum potential.  The form tutors role is particularly important, especially at times when students may be facing demands and stress in their life.

Pastoral Structure

We have also appointed Heads of Houses to help oversee the welfare of your child at Key Stage 3 and 4.

Head of House Sophia Popat
Head of House Wahida Ali

Punctuality

Please ensure your child arrives to school 10 minutes before the start of registration.  Students arriving late will have to report to the school reception where they will be signed in and will be issued a late slip.

The school places great emphasis on punctuality. If your child arrives late on the first occasion during the first half-term, a warning will be given. If your child is late a second time a twenty minutes after school detention will be given.  A third late will result in a one hour after school detention.

Absence

If your child is unable to attend school, you must inform the school reception before morning registration. On your child’s return to school, you will need to send an absence note to your child’s form tutor explaining the reason for his absence.  Persistent absence will result in the Education Welfare Officer becoming involved.

Medical appointments should, wherever possible, be kept out of school hours.  If this is unavoidable, your child’s form tutor must be informed in advance of the appointment.  Students are not permitted to leave the school premises unsupervised during school hours, and must be collected from the school reception.

Absence During Term Time

We have worked very hard to achieve the best attendance figures in Leicester City and this has developed from a very strict policy when it comes to absences during term-time. If your child is in school regularly, then they will learn better and achieve the best grades.

Apart from Hajj (10 Days Only), no other absence will be authorised during term time. However in the case of an emergency you are requested to fill out an absence request form and each decision will be made on a case by case basis. Please obtain a form from reception.

Behaviour Management

There is a whole school approach to managing behaviour which is driven by Islamic principals expressed in the mission statement.  Students are encouraged to adopt an Islamic etiquette to promote positive behaviour.

We aim for our staff to be confident and skilled in their handling of inappropriate and disruptive behaviour. Where students need to be disciplined for such behaviour they will be treated fairly and without discrimination in line with the school’s Behaviour Management Policy. In addition, the school will take proactive steps to prevent exclusion but on some occasions we may need to exclude to ensure the well-being of others is protected and that our ethos is not compromised.

Homework

Homework plays a vital part in a child’s education. It is essential that all students in the school are committed to doing homework on a regular basis in order to realise their full academic potential.

To assist both parents and students, each student is provided with an individual Student Planner to record the details of homework set each day.  Parents are requested to inspect and sign the Student Planner once a week.

Homework can vary in form and quantity, according to the teaching group, the programmes of study and the requirements of the member of staff. Homework may be in the form of a written assignment, a piece of research, revision of completed work, or preparation for a future lesson.

Parents Evening/Reports

Parent’s evenings are held once a year, when staff will be available for consultation.  Your child will be issued with an attainment report in the course of each term.

If there are matters which concern you regarding your child which you would like to discuss, please contact the school to make an appointment with your child’s form tutor.

Parents Evenings

Communications

The school will often send letters home to parents via their child.  The school also has a system which securely sends text messages direct to parents.  Parents will receive a text message if their child is absent from school requesting them to call the school if they have not already done so.  We will also send text messages from time to time to inform parents of events, such as review days, notification of parents evening, school closure etc.

It is important that parents inform the school if there are changes in details like address and telephone numbers so that school records are up to date and no difficulties are faced when contacting parents.

Parent communication

School Travel Plan

In accordance with the Madani Girls Schools’ Travel Plan, all students are strongly encouraged to either walk, cycle or use public transport to get to and from school.  There are bicycle sheds on the site grounds where students can secure their bikes.  Parents are requested to avoid using cars to bring students to school for safety reasons and to minimise traffic congestion outside the school premises.

Student Council

At Madani Girls School, the student council aims to help establish and maintain a stimulating atmosphere to the school, by providing an official voice through which students’ opinions are expressed.

The Student Council plays an important part in the life of the school and discusses issues raised by the students, as well as overseeing charity and social events and supporting the development of original, creative and innovative ideas of every individual in the school.

Complaints Procedure

The school will give careful consideration to all complaints and deal with them fairly and honestly.  To allow for a proper investigation, complaints should be brought to the attention of the school as soon as possible. Any matters raised a month after the date of the event will not be considered.

Complaints linked to teaching should be made to the subject teacher initially.  If it is not possible to resolve the complaint informally, a formal complaints procedure is available where the complaint can be put into writing to the Head Teacher and if need be to the Chair of the Governing Body.  Details of the Complaints procedure are available from the school.
