Computing & Business

Computing and Business Department

The Computer Science and Business Studies department is dedicated to providing all students with an understanding of the role that Computer Science and ICT play in the modern world.

A high-quality computer science education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Computer Science (OCR J276)

The GCSE Computer Science course has real relevance in our modern world. While students will no doubt already have some knowledge of computers and related areas, this course will give them in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and a look at what goes on “behind the scenes”. As part of this, students will investigate computer programming, which many students find interesting - a fun and interesting way to develop critical thinking analysis and problem solving skills which can be applied to everyday life.

Business (OCR J253 [Y11] and OCR J204 [Y10])

The GCSE Business course encourages students to be inspired, moved and changed by studying a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It allows students to gain an insight into related sectors such as economics and accounting as well as appreciate the range of perspectives of different stakeholders in relation to business and economic activities.

Yr 10 students will study GCSE Business (9-1) and Y11 students will study GCSE Business Studies

ECDL is currently delivered to Year 11 students and was an option in the previous academic year.
